What to Expect

Before Your Scan

  • Fast for at least 4 hours (water is fine)
  • Drink 1 litre of water 1 hour before
  • Do not empty your bladder before arriving
  • No GP referral required

During Your Scan

  • Lie comfortably on the examination couch
  • Warm gel applied to your abdomen
  • Systematic scan of abdomen then urinary tract
  • Live images shown on screen throughout

After Your Scan

  • Immediate verbal results from the sonographer
  • Printed scan images to take home
  • Detailed written report within 24 hours
  • GP report sent with your consent

Common Questions

What preparation is needed?

Fast for at least 4 hours before your appointment (water is fine). Also drink 1 litre of water about 1 hour before and do not empty your bladder. Both fasting and a full bladder are required for optimal imaging.

How long does the scan take?

The combined examination typically takes 30–45 minutes. Allow up to 60 minutes for your total appointment.

Can this scan detect gallstones and kidney stones in the same appointment?

Yes. This combined scan assesses both the gallbladder for gallstones and the kidneys for kidney stones in a single appointment, saving you time and cost.

Will I get results on the day?

Yes. The sonographer will discuss findings with you immediately after the scan. A detailed written report is emailed within 24 hours.

Do I need a GP referral?
