Clinical Overview

What is a Knee Ultrasound Scan?

A Knee Ultrasound Scan is a safe and effective imaging technique that uses sound waves to produce real-time images of the soft tissues within and around the knee joint. It allows for detailed assessment of tendons, ligaments, muscles, menisci, and bursae, providing crucial information for diagnosis.

Is This Scan Right for You?

Who Should Book This Scan?

Individuals experiencing knee pain, swelling, or stiffness
Athletes with suspected sports injuries like ligament sprains or tendon tears
Patients with a 'Baker's cyst' or other fluid collections around the knee
Those with suspected tendinopathy, such as patellar or quadriceps tendinopathy
Anyone needing assessment for meniscal tears or cartilage issues not requiring MRI.
Diagnostic Scope

What This Scan Can Detect

Tendinopathy (e.g., Patellar or Quadriceps Tendonitis)
Inflammation or degeneration of the tendons around the knee, often causing pain during movement. Ultrasound can visualise tendon thickening, tears, and inflammation.
Baker's Cyst (Popliteal Cyst)
A fluid-filled sac behind the knee, causing swelling and discomfort. Ultrasound accurately identifies and measures these cysts, differentiating them from other masses.
Joint Effusion (Fluid in the Joint)
Excess fluid within the knee joint, indicating inflammation or injury. Ultrasound can detect even small effusions and guide aspiration if necessary.
Ligament Sprains and Tears
Damage to the ligaments (e.g., MCL, LCL) supporting the knee. Ultrasound can assess the integrity of superficial ligaments and detect tears or laxity.
Meniscal Tears (Peripheral)
Tears in the cartilage (menisci) within the knee joint. While MRI is superior for central tears, ultrasound can detect peripheral meniscal pathology and associated effusions.
