Do I need any preparation for a thyroid ultrasound scan?

No special preparation is required. You can eat and drink normally before your appointment. Simply wear comfortable clothing with an open neckline for easy access.

How long does the scan take?

The examination typically takes 20–30 minutes. Allow 45 minutes for your total appointment including preparation and results discussion.

Can ultrasound detect thyroid cancer?

Ultrasound can identify suspicious nodules that may require further investigation such as a biopsy. It is the primary imaging tool for thyroid assessment and is highly effective at characterising nodule features.

Will I get results on the day?

Yes. The sonographer will discuss findings with you immediately after the scan. A detailed written report is emailed within 24 hours.
