Understanding Your Situation

When concerns about your reproductive health weigh heavily on your mind

It's natural to feel anxious when facing gynaecological concerns. A Transvaginal Ultrasound Scan offers a clear, detailed view of your internal reproductive organs, providing the clarity and reassurance you need to understand your health better. At our Marylebone clinic on Weymouth Street, same-day appointments are available and no GP referral is needed.

Clinical Overview

What is a Transvaginal Ultrasound Scan?

A transvaginal ultrasound is an internal examination using a small, lubricated probe inserted into the vagina. This proximity allows for highly detailed imaging of the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and surrounding pelvic structures, offering superior resolution compared to an abdominal scan.

Diagnostic Scope

What This Scan Can Detect

Uterine Fibroids
Benign growths in the uterus, often causing heavy bleeding or pelvic pressure. The scan assesses their size, number, and location.
Ovarian Cysts
Fluid-filled sacs on the ovaries, which can be physiological or pathological. The scan differentiates types and monitors changes.
Endometrial Polyps
Overgrowths of the uterine lining, a common cause of abnormal bleeding. The scan identifies their presence and size.
Adenomyosis
A condition where endometrial tissue grows into the muscular wall of the uterus, leading to painful periods. The scan can show characteristic changes in the uterine wall.
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
A hormonal disorder causing enlarged ovaries with small cysts. The scan helps diagnose and monitor ovarian morphology.

What Happens During Your Scan

1

Arrival & Consent

You'll be welcomed at our Marylebone clinic and asked to provide consent for the procedure. Our sonographer will explain the process and answer any questions.

2

Preparation

You'll be asked to empty your bladder for optimal imaging. You'll then lie on an examination couch, and a small, sterile probe will be gently inserted into the vagina.

3

The Scan

The sonographer will move the probe to visualise your uterus, ovaries, and surrounding structures. Images will be captured and displayed on a screen, which you can view if you wish.

4

Comfort & Duration

The scan typically takes 20-30 minutes and is generally not painful, though some mild discomfort may be experienced. Our sonographer will ensure your comfort throughout.

5

Post-Scan Discussion

After the scan, the sonographer will discuss initial findings with you. A detailed written report will be prepared by a consultant radiologist within 24 hours.
